SAP Skills in Demand Across the DACH Region: What We Are Seeing in 2026

The SAP contract market in Germany and the wider DACH region is moving fast, and one thing is driving it: the countdown to S/4HANA. With SAP winding down support for its older systems, companies across the region are racing to migrate, and that is pulling demand across finance, logistics, data and the technical platform all at once, with a new wave of AI and Clean Core work close behind. Here is where the demand sits in 2026, and the trends shaping what comes next.

The S/4HANA countdown is driving everything

It starts with one deadline. SAP is ending mainstream maintenance for its older ECC system at the end of 2027, with optional extended maintenance to 2030. Every company still running it has to move to S/4HANA, SAP’s current generation, and in practice that is a large, multi year programme rather than a simple upgrade.

That single deadline is what makes the market so active. Companies across DACH are mid migration or scoping one, and each programme needs finance, logistics, data and technical specialists at the same time. Two SAP offerings shape how they do it: RISE with SAP, the private cloud route to S/4HANA, and GROW with SAP, the public cloud route aimed at faster, more standardised adoption. Both appear regularly in current briefs, and they signal the kind of roles that follow.

In short, the deadline is fixed, the work is unavoidable, and the specialists who can deliver it are in short supply. That combination is keeping SAP contract demand high across the region.

Finance and logistics remain the core of most S/4HANA programmes. Data roles (migration, MDG, Datasphere) are growing fast, because moving to S/4HANA is as much a data exercise as a functional one. And integration and platform skills sit alongside almost every project.

The newer trends we are watching

Alongside the core migration work, a set of newer themes is appearing more and more in briefs and market data. A recent German market survey found that 44% of companies still rank completing their S/4HANA migration as their single biggest challenge, and much of the innovation below is aimed squarely at that. These themes are worth knowing whether you are hiring or planning your own skills.

Clean Core and BTP. The current best practice is to keep the S/4HANA core standard and move customisations onto the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP). It keeps systems easier to upgrade and lower risk. Clean Core and BTP skills are increasingly asked for by name.

AI and Joule. SAP is embedding AI across its products, including its assistant Joule and a push into agentic AI, where AI agents carry out tasks inside SAP using the company’s own data. It is early, but it is already changing what a modern SAP project looks like.

Datasphere and Business Data Cloud. SAP’s data platform strategy is a growing area, which is why we are seeing more Datasphere and data focused roles. Getting data right is central to a successful S/4HANA move.

Cloud ALM. SAP Cloud ALM is replacing the older Solution Manager for running and monitoring SAP landscapes, so familiarity with it is becoming a plus.

Sustainability. Tools like SAP Green Ledger let companies track carbon alongside financials, tying ESG reporting into the core system. A smaller theme today, but a growing one.

Bluefield migration. Between a clean rebuild and a straight technical conversion sits the Bluefield approach, which lets a company redesign key processes while carrying over the data that matters. It is a common middle path on current programmes.

What this means for the market

For hiring managers: the scarcest skills, S/4HANA, data migration, Clean Core and BTP, and experienced architects, are the ones every live programme is competing for, and they become harder to secure as go-live approaches. Programmes tend to run best when they are resourced early, with a mix of roles planned rather than a single hire.

For contractors: the skills holding the strongest demand are S/4HANA experience, data and migration expertise, and Clean Core and BTP. Deep functional knowledge in finance or logistics remains valuable, and combining it with S/4HANA and an awareness of the newer platform and AI tools widens the roles on offer. German alongside English opens the broadest pool of work in the DACH market.
