RISE vs GROW: What SAP’s Two Cloud Routes Mean for Hiring
Almost every SAP move to the cloud now goes one of two ways, RISE with SAP or GROW with SAP. The one a company picks shapes the whole programme, including the skills it needs on the team. For anyone hiring or contracting in the SAP world, it helps to know the difference. Here is what each route is, how the choice affects the skills in demand, and what it means whether you are hiring or planning your own next move.
What RISE and GROW are
Both are routes to SAP’s current generation, S/4HANA Cloud, but they suit different companies.
RISE with SAP is the private cloud route. It is aimed at organisations, often larger or more complex, that are moving an existing SAP system to the cloud and want to keep more of their own processes and customisation. It is the usual path for a company converting from older SAP software with years of tailored setup behind it.
GROW with SAP is the public cloud route. It is aimed at companies adopting SAP in a more standard, out-of-the-box way, often newer or mid-sized businesses, or those starting fresh. It is faster to roll out and keeps closer to SAP’s standard, with customisation kept light and on the Business Technology Platform.
In short, RISE leans towards tailored and complex, GROW towards standard and fast.
The comparison, and the skills each needs
Here is how the two compare, and the skills each tends to need.
| RISE with SAP | GROW with SAP |
Cloud type | Private cloud | Public cloud |
Best suited to | Existing, often larger or complex SAP users | Newer or mid-sized firms, or those starting fresh |
Customisation | More scope to keep tailored processes | Standard first, customisation kept light on BTP |
Pace | Longer, more tailored programmes | Faster, more standardised rollouts |
Skills most in demand | Functional config, data migration, Basis, Clean Core, BTP | Clean Core, Fiori, public cloud configuration, BTP |
What this means
For hiring managers. Knowing which route your programme is on helps you hire the right people, not just generic SAP skills. A RISE programme usually needs strong functional and migration experience, and people comfortable with a more complex, tailored system. A GROW programme leans more towards Clean Core, Fiori and configuring a standard public cloud setup quickly. Being clear about your route in a brief helps you attract people who have done that kind of work before, rather than the wrong fit.
For contractors. It is worth knowing which world a role sits in. Deep functional and migration experience is especially valuable on RISE programmes, while Clean Core, Fiori and public cloud configuration skills are increasingly asked for on GROW ones. Many of the core skills, S/4HANA, Clean Core and BTP, matter either way, so building those keeps you placeable across both. Being able to speak to both routes in an interview marks you out.

| RISE with SAP | GROW with SAP |
Cloud-Typ | Private Cloud | Public Cloud |
Was das bedeutet
