AI in SAP: What Joule and Agentic AI Mean for the Market

AI has already arrived in SAP, and it is advancing quickly. This is not a bolt-on feature. SAP has embedded it into the core of its products, through an assistant called Joule that has matured over the past couple of years, and a newer move into agentic AI, where software agents carry out tasks independently. The agentic side is still developing, and the surrounding hype can obscure the substance, so this is a clear look at what is genuinely happening and what it means for the SAP market.

What SAP is actually building

At the centre of SAP’s AI push is Joule, an assistant built into SAP’s applications. Instead of hunting through screens, a user can ask Joule in plain language and it works across the system to help. The bigger shift is that Joule is moving from assistant to agent. SAP’s Business AI now includes Joule agents, described by SAP as agents that perform specialised roles and collaborate across finance, supply chain, procurement and other functions, using the company’s own business data.

That is what agentic AI means in an SAP context: software that can carry out multi-step tasks on its own, inside the system, rather than just answering questions. It is being woven across the SAP landscape, from S/4HANA to the Business Technology Platform and Datasphere, so it draws on the same data and processes your teams already run.

What it actually changes on projects

It is worth cutting through the noise. This is still early, and for now AI in SAP augments people rather than replaces them. What it does change is what a modern SAP project looks like, and where the value sits.

The biggest practical effect is that it raises the stakes on data and Clean Core. AI is only as good as the data underneath it and the standard core it runs on. A messy system with heavy customisation is a poor foundation for AI, so the move to clean, well-governed data and a standard S/4HANA core matters even more than it did. In other words, the groundwork companies are already doing for their migration is the same groundwork that makes AI useful later.

It also creates fresh demand for the skills that sit around it: BTP, data, and the people who can connect SAP’s AI to real business processes rather than just switching it on. That is where the early value is being found.

What this means

For hiring managers. AI is not yet a reason to hire fewer SAP people. If anything, getting value from it depends on good data, a clean core and skilled people to set it up and govern it. The sensible move is to keep building a capable team and a solid data foundation now, so you are ready to use SAP’s AI properly when it matters, rather than bolting it on to a messy system later.

For contractors. This is worth getting ahead of. Get familiar with Joule and SAP Business AI, and keep your BTP and data skills sharp. The people who will be in demand are not the ones who can say the buzzwords, but the ones who can connect SAP’s AI to a real business process and make it work. Pairing that awareness with strong functional or data knowledge is a genuinely future-proof position.

Was SAP tatsächlich aufbaut

Was sich dadurch in Projekten wirklich ändert

Was das bedeutet
